3 things you need to get started with yoga

I often get asked, “what do I need to start a yoga practice?” the answer is simple — you don’t need a lot despite what our consumeristic culture is telling you. here are the 3 things you need to get started with your yoga practice.

01. get yourself a quality mat.

a mat can make or break your experience while you practice. I recommend spending the money upfront & investing in a mat you love. I like thicker mats that don’t make me slip. there’s nothing worse than sliding all over the place while you’re trying to breathe in down dog. I like my yolohalo plant foam cork mat — its the right amount of thickness for me & I don’t slip because the cork. other great mats are:

this one from REI.

this one from the popular name brand athletic shop.

this one is heavy & thick but that won’t be a big deal if you’re just using it at home.

02. comfy clothes.

make sure your practicing in clothes that you feel comfortable in. you don’t want to be adjusting your clothes while you practice so wear something that’s comfy. if you’re looking for some new yoga clothes, I’m obsessed with the brand vuori - the quality is worth the price tag & everything is sooooo comfy. this brand is also fabulous if you’re into flowy comfy clothes too - use the code: allylauren for 10% off.

03. props.

props are great tools to use no matter your yoga experience. I recommend having a blanket, 2 blocks, and a strap. if you’re not like me & have more than 77 sqft of living space, a bolster would also be on my list but this is not necessary for practicing. if you’re on a budget, use a towel instead of a blanket, use books instead of blocks, and use a tie or dishtowel as a strap. these are the blanket, blocks, & strap you’ll see me practicing with In the yoga library.

so there you have it, friends! you’re ready to practice yoga with me! head into the yoga library, pick your flow, & let’s get started!
